About KU
The woman behind Ku, Suzie Mylecharane, commenced her career in the late 60’s as a manager and designer for the In Shoppes in Sydney and Melbourne. During this exciting and innovative era she designed knitwear that employed cottage industry workers from the Greek and Italian communities and designed costumes for the original Australian Production of “Hair”.
The sea change to the North Coast around Byron Bay came in the early 70’s, where Ku Clothing was created. This thriving small business employed local people and supplied shops Australia wide as well as outlets in England. Each item was always individual and unique with many being hand painted or screen-printed.
In the mid 1980’s Suzie turned her attention to the music industry, still keeping the clothing bubbling away in the background. The music business flourished and soon she was touring International acts Australia wide including Kora legend Toumani Diabate from Mali and Canadian great Harry Manx. Damien Rice and Martha Wainwright shows were presented by Ku Promotions. Large outdoor performances followed with acts that included Missy Higgins and The Cat Empire.
Following the sale of Ku Promotions in early 2009, Suzie has returned to the fashion industry, this time with fresh and affordable street wear sourced from young designers in Thailand.
These new ranges are exclusive to Ku and their originality has massive market potential.
